Newspaper archivists, Rod and Wendy Gow, while indexing the Manning River Times, uncovered the serialised recollections of the late John Allan, J.P., of Kimbriki, one of the Manning’s early pioneers.
In 1928, F. A. Fitzpatrick, of Wingham Chronicle fame, had secured these recollections, originally written in 1905, from J. C. Allan, of The Bight, Wingham, and subsequently they were featured in the Manning River Times newspaper.
John Allan, as a young man, along with some family members, arrived in 1851 at the entrance of the Manning River aboard the ketch “Orient” and on crossing the bar their vessel was unceremoniously grounded, - a not uncommon occurrence in those days - with all the goods having to be unloaded on to the beach, where wet and cold, they evaluated their loss.
The Allan family, consisting of parents, George, a chemist, his wife Mary, and sons William - a vet (who administered medical assistance to the early settlers prior to any doctor living on the river), and John, settled at Kimbriki where they had purchased 200 acres from the Australian Agricultural Company, and later expanded their holdings with land at Cooplacurripa and at Trunkey, Liverpool Plains.
These articles contain many mentions of the early pioneers of the Manning and describes where they were living, the trials and tribulations that early settlers endured as part of their everyday life, the flood of 1857 which was then eclipsed by the flood of 1866, journeys through the bush in the Manning and Liverpool Plains, the establishment of cattle stations, sheep runs, maize and dairy farming, sugar and timber mills, and the difficulties that were just part of pioneering - even to the trouble of trying to buy a hat
