Today’s farmers have the latest information available at their fingertips from a plethora of sources, everything from agricultural fact sheets through to volumes of information instantly downloaded from the internet. When our pioneers were opening up the Manning Valley, it was a different world.

From the 1850s to the 1930s the main forum for discussion on the latest farming practices were the local newspapers. Farmers brought samples of their latest crop or pasture grass to the newspaper offices, articles were written, other farmers when they came to town inspected and gave their views of the produce. Newspapers published articles on recommended crops, such as cotton, tobacco, castor oil plant, paddy’s lucerne, all in an effort to add to the farm income staple of maize and the prosperity of the valley.

Grasses such as Rhodes, paspalum and kikuyu were discussed at great length. When dairy stock were introduced to paspalum in the early 1900s, the quality and quantity of milk dramatically increased, and undoubtedly brought a smile to the faces of farmers. Changes to farming practices came thick and fast, investment in cream separators soon became a necessity - the boom was well under way. As time rolled on tractors and implements and milking machines were purchased, further increasing production and making the farm more efficient. State wide maize and farm competitions were held, the results were published in detail, all assisting the local farmer in his effort to excel.

This book features selected reports extracted from the following newspapers - Maitland Mercury, Manning and Hastings Advocate, Manning River Chronicle, Manning River Independent, Manning River News, Manning River Times, Northern Champion, The Empire, and Wingham Chronicle. All of these newspapers gave Manning Valley farmers great support, and a forum for ideas and innovations, which greatly assisted the development of the industry.

This book gives an interesting insight into what the pioneers planted to improve income and increase production together with the diseases and weeds they fought in establishing a way of life in the early days of the Manning Valley  district.
