This book was written for my children so that they would have a better understanding of the day-to-day lives of their ancestors. Rather than provide them with a family chart listing names and dates, I wanted them to be able to visualize their ancestors in the Australian society as it was at the time.
 

My thanks go to the late Brigid Marie Jenkins (nee Fennell), affectionally known as "Auntie Bea" (pictured on the right).

Without her diligence in maintaining her album of family photographs, newspaper clippings, momentos, etc., this book would probably not have been written. It was because of her album that my interest in family history began.

I would like to thank my brother-in-law, Ian McNeill for the information on John Jenkins and his family. I would also to thank Mr. Ian Ryder, a relative of my husband's for the information on the Ryder/McNeill families and for information on the Scottish theatre.

Where-ever possible I have used primary information, but when this was not possible I have had to rely on secondary sources. I apologize to any family member if any of the information that I have used in this book is incorrect.
