Dedication to William

DEDICATION TO WILLIAM "CHARCOAL" WILLIAMS

William Williams had led a very full and active life in his new country of Australia. He had lived to see Australia grow from a convict colony in the 1820s to a politically, united country in 1901.

His love of mining had exposed him to all sorts of dangers, especially to his health, working in wet shafts and in undertaking long journeys by road in all sort of weather.

William made a fortune from mining, but he also spent most of fortune just as quickly. He was always a generous man and when the Adelong Institute was erected William presented it with a handsome collection of books.

While William gained and lost a fortune in gold, he was successful in raising a loving family. William had 5 children, 34 grandchildren and about 20 great-grandchildren at the time of his death.

This book is dedicated to my children who are William's great, great, great, grandchildren and if they have inherited any small part of his constitution, in being capable of enduring many of life's fluctuations, then perhaps he has left behind something far more valuable than his gold.

WILLIAMS FAMILY REUNION 2002

In May 2002, a family reunion was held in Adelong and there were many family members representing each of the five children of William "Charcoal" and Eliza Williams.

The eldest descendant was celebrating her 90th birthday and the youngest was only a few months old.

A thanksgiving service was held on Sunday 5 May 2002 at the Adelong Catholic Church, the same church where William and Eliza's funeral services were held. Five candles were lit in celebration of William and Eliza's five children - Edward, Eliza, Willliam, Maria and Caroline.
