"CHARCOAL" CONTINUES MINING IN 1880s

In the 1880s "Charcoal" Williams was still engaged in mining activities in the Adelong area. He invested in the Currajong Reef, which was among the hills overlooking the town.

William's son-in-law, John Tillott of Adelong, also had an interest in this mine which was later sold to a Sydney syndicate.

"Charcoal" acquired £25,000 ($50,000) as his share, which he then invested in land and erected the mill at Adelong Crossing.

GROWTH OF ADELONG TOWN

The population of Adelong had swelled to over 20,000 by the 1880s and many new buildings were erected. Many of these buildings are now classified by the National Trust.
