The book tells of the original Aboriginal people; Lieutenant (later Captain) Cook; European settlement; the rise and fall of the shipbuilding industry; shipwrecks; the fishing and oyster industries; personalities, families and the area’s growth into one of Australia’s unique holiday destinations.
Forster sits on the southern side of the ocean entrance to Wallis Lake (New South Wales’ largest coastal lake) about 300 kilometre (3 1/2 hours drive) north of Sydney (between Newcastle and Port Macquarie). It is linked to its twin town of Tuncurry by a bridge across the lake.
The book also contains some history of the areas south of Forster, including Tiona, Pacific Palms, Smiths Lake, Coomba and Bungwahl (situated on Myall Lake).
